How much Mac do you need for local dictation?

A practical way to decide whether your current Apple Silicon Mac has enough memory for local dictation, without relying on misleading model-size tables.

You probably do not need a new Mac for local dictation. If your current machine has Apple Silicon and runs macOS 14 or later, try the complete dictation setup before you spend anything. That is ShoutFlow's current compatibility line. Intel Macs are not currently supported. [1]

If you are buying a Mac mainly for dictation, a 16GB unified memory model is the sensible default because Apple's 2026 M5 MacBook Air and 2024 M4 Mac mini both start there, not because any benchmark proves 16GB is universally sufficient. [3] [4] There is no published ShoutFlow evidence that dictation needs a Pro or Max chip, or 32GB of memory.

That answer is less dramatic than a chip ranking, but it is more honest. The neat RAM tables circulating around Whisper mix incompatible measurements and then pretend the result is a buying guide.

Why model-size arithmetic gives the wrong answer

A model has several different sizes. Its download can be one size, its weights another, and its working memory during inference another again. Quantisation changes those figures. So does the runtime.

This matters because ShoutFlow's local transcription route uses WhisperKit, an on-device speech framework built for Apple hardware. [1] [6] Many published Whisper memory tables describe whisper.cpp and GGML instead. Those numbers may be valid for whisper.cpp, but they do not become ShoutFlow requirements just because both systems run a Whisper model.

The clean-up stage makes a simple RAM sum even less useful. Local dictation can involve speech recognition followed by a separate language model that removes filler words or applies formatting. macOS, your browser, Slack and everything else on the machine share the same unified memory. A download label cannot tell you how that complete workload will behave.

So this guide does not assign small to 8GB, turbo to 16GB or a larger model to 24GB. We do not have a controlled ShoutFlow benchmark that supports those tiers.

The keep-or-buy rule

Use the machine you have if it passes the compatibility check. Upgrade only after the intended models create a problem you can reproduce.

The oldest machine in that table is not hypothetical. Apple's 2020 M1 MacBook Air came with 8GB unified memory and could be configured with 16GB. [2] The 2026 M5 MacBook Air and 2024 M4 Mac mini start at 16GB. [3] [4] Those are configuration facts, not proof that one model runs at a particular speed.

The distinction matters when buying used. An M1 with 16GB may be the better dictation purchase than a newer machine with less memory, but only price, battery condition and your wider workload can settle that choice. Chip generation is not a substitute for testing.

A five-minute test beats a speculative upgrade

Run this with the apps you normally keep open. Closing everything creates a laboratory result for a working day you do not have.

  1. Install the dictation app and download the speech and clean-up models you plan to use.
  2. Open Activity Monitor and select the Memory tab.
  3. Dictate for five minutes into a real document. Include a few short bursts and one longer paragraph so both transcription and clean-up run repeatedly.
  4. Watch the Memory Pressure graph during the test. Also note whether the result arrives quickly enough for your normal pace.
  5. If pressure turns yellow or red, repeat the same passage with a smaller speech model or lighter clean-up option before considering new hardware.

Apple says green Memory Pressure means the Mac is using its RAM efficiently. Yellow means it might eventually need more RAM, while red means it needs more. [5] That is more useful than staring at the amount of unused memory because macOS also compresses and caches memory as part of normal operation.

A single green run does not guarantee every future workload. It does answer the immediate question: can this Mac handle the way you intend to dictate today?

What extra memory actually buys

More memory buys headroom. It lets the dictation pipeline coexist with heavier browser sessions, development tools, creative software and larger local language models. That can be worth paying for, particularly when memory cannot be upgraded later.

It does not prove that the microphone will feel more responsive, that a transcript will be more accurate, or that a Pro chip will save a meaningful amount of time. Those are benchmark questions. Without a named Mac, macOS version, model build, audio sample and warm or cold test protocol, confident performance claims are guesswork.

For a machine dedicated to ordinary writing and dictation, 16GB is a restrained default. Choose 24GB or more because you expect broader local-AI or professional workloads, not because a model-size table told you Whisper had consumed the whole Mac.
